Our Mission
The mission of Cara and Cabezas Contemporary is to represent and exhibit the work of contemporary artists from Central and South America alongside that of local artists living in the cities in which the gallery occupies exhibition space, currently San Francisco and Kansas City. Working in multiple venues, Cara and Cabezas Contemporary provides the opportunity to share a particular body of work with diverse audiences and expands exchange between cultural centers.
Paulo Cabezas, Director
Paulo has been a socially-responsible entrepreneur in San Francisco since 1998. Very soon after his family immigrated from Central America, he began a youth mentorship program for recent immigrant youth in San Francisco and this organization is in the process of obtaining 501c3 status as New Eden Projects. In 2004, he founded a cultural venue, Mama Art Cafe, where he continues to direct the arts programming. His curatorial process involves a careful construction of programming that first benefits the practice of local artists and secondly introduces an audience to international talent.
Cara Megan Lewis, Curator
Cara Megan received her Master’s Degree in June 2007 from the Curatorial Practice Program at the California College of the Arts. Her experience in the arts includes three years as a registrar at Fraenkel Gallery, registration work on the Diane Arbus Retrospective at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and curatorial assistance for the arts programming at Mamá Art Cafe in San Francisco. Additionally, Cara Megan works as an independent curator and serves on the Curatorial Committee for Charlotte Street Foundation's Urban Culture Projects in Kansas City.
